Sylvania Classic Hockey League
Rules and Regulations
2022-23
NOTE: THESE RULES AND REGULATIONS OF THE LEAGUE ARE NOT MENT TO BE ALL INCLUSIVE AND THE BOARD RESERVES THE RIGHT TO AMEND THEM, SHOULD UNPREDICATED EVENTS OCCUR THAT WOULD REQUIRE SOME ACTION OF THE BOARD.
- Any player who receives a penalty and acts in an unsportsmanlike manner can be ejected from the game at the discretion of the referee.
- Any player who receives 3 penalties in one game will receive a game misconduct at the time of the fourth infraction. (Each penalty counts as one penalty, i.e. an unsportsmanlike conduct on top of a tripping penalty counts as a second penalty.) A game misconduct requires that a player be ejected from the present game and not be allowed to play in the next scheduled game.
- Any player who receives 2 game misconducts in one season will automatically be ejected from the league for the rest of the season. During the off season his/her record will be reviewed by the board to determine if this player should be allowed to play in subsequent years.
- The board reserves the right to override officials’ calls in the event of a witnessed and reported (written) incident. An incident report form must be filled out by the captain of the team.
- Players are strongly encouraged to wear full protective gear, including eye protection.
- Games will be timed as follows: 1st Period – 22 minutes run time, 2nd Period – 22 minutes run time, 3rd Period 24 minutes. When the point spread is less than 3, the last 2 minutes will be stop time.
- During the regular season games will be allowed to end with a tie score.
- During playoffs games tied at the end of regulation extend to 5 minute sudden death with teams defending the opposite goal. In the event there is no goal scored in sudden death there will be a 5 player shootout with goalies defending their own goal. If the game is still tied after the shootout, single round shootouts will be used. Different shooters will be used for each shot taken in the shootout until all players have attempted a shot if required.
- Intent to Injure. Should anyone be so malignant as to admit to intending to injure another player during a game or after a game, that player will be permanently banned from the league.
- Intent to Hit. Intent to hit in its definition includes but is not limited to, checking, boarding, charging, and hitting another player, or anything the referee or board member decides is the intent of one player to hit another. Dropping the gloves will by definition be intent to hit. In case of an injury, the player who hit the player who was injured will be ejected from the game and will not be allowed to return to playing hockey in the Sylvania Senior Hockey League until the injured player returns. When the injured player is deemed healthy for play by the board, the board will meet and decide the fate of the player that caused the injury. This player will not play until the board has made its final decision. If this period of time is greater than one year, the offending player will be reconsidered for play the next year. There is no guarantee the player will be allowed to play. This will be at the discretion of the board. Even if an injured player does not sit out any games (i.e. a laceration, contusion, strain) the player inflicting the injury will be ejected from the present game and the next game (per USA HOCKEY RULES), plus the next two games. The board will make a final determination of the full consequence of the player’s action at its next board meeting. Dropping the gloves will be regarded as a serious offence. Per USA HOCKEY RULES AND REGULATIONS, the player will be ejected from the present game and the next scheduled game. The player will also be ejected for an additional two games. If an injury occurs as a result of a fight the board at its next meeting will decide on the fate of the involved players.
- Accident. An accident is a hit that occurs without fault on any player’s part. This is an inherent risk in the game of hockey and all players must accept this risk. If injury occurs due to an accident, we will accept a no fault philosophy. The non-injured player will not be ejected from the game, although the referee may elect to give a penalty. This will NOT define intent in any way. If the referee decides there was intent, it will be treated as Intent to Hit. However if two players have previously been in any altercation, the second “accident” will be regarded as an intent to hit and the non-injured player will not be allowed to return to play until the injured player can return to play, and the board has made a decision on the player causing the injury.
- Goalie Protection - Contact on a Goaltender in the crease, will result in a minor penalty and if a player is pushed into a goaltender, BOTH players will be assessed a minor penalty.
- Substitutes (subs) - teams can pick up a sub when they have 9 or less regular skaters. The number of subs is limited to get the roster to 10 skaters. A sub goalie can be used to allow the regular goalie to skate out as long as the number of regular skaters is 10 or less including the goalie skating out.
- Playoff Subs - no subs are allowed during playoffs other than for goalie. Goalie subs must be taken from active goalies.
